Back-to-School, Back-to-Basics: Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Back-to-School, Back-to-Basics: Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
The kids are heading back to school, the mornings have that first hint of crispness, and pumpkin spice is suddenly everywhere. Fall is here — and while your calendar is filling up with school pickups and soccer practice, this is actually the perfect window to give your home a little love before winter rolls in.
Not sure where to start? You don't need to do it all in one weekend. Here's a simple, room-by-room (er, task-by-task) guide to get your house ready for the season.
1. Give Your Gutters Some Attention
Once the leaves really start falling, your gutters are going to be doing a lot of work. Clear out any debris now so rain and melting snow have somewhere to go later. Clogged gutters are one of the sneakiest causes of roof and foundation damage — a quick clean-out now can save you a costly repair down the road.
2. Seal Up Drafts
Walk around your home and check windows, doors, and any gaps where pipes or cables enter the house. A simple bead of caulk or a fresh weatherstrip can make a real difference in your heating bill once temperatures drop. Bonus: it keeps your house cozier for movie nights and homework sessions alike.
3. Get Your Furnace Checked
Before you actually need the heat, make sure it's ready to deliver it. Replace the filter, and if it's been a year or more, consider having a professional take a look. There's nothing worse than a furnace that decides to quit on the first cold night.
4. Inspect the Roof
While you're outside dealing with the gutters, take a moment to look up. Missing or curling shingles, cracked flashing, or any soft spots are much easier (and cheaper) to fix in October than after a winter storm has made things worse.
5. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
With furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters coming back into regular use, this is a great time to test your detectors and swap in fresh batteries. It takes five minutes and it's one of those small tasks that makes a big difference.
6. Prep the Fireplace or Chimney
If you have a fireplace, a professional chimney sweep before the first fire of the season clears out creosote buildup and any critters that may have moved in over the summer. Nothing ruins a cozy night by the fire faster than a chimney fire.
7. Store the Summer Gear, Bring Out the Fall Stuff
Hoses, patio cushions, and the kiddie pool can be drained, cleaned, and tucked away. Meanwhile, it's worth double-checking that your rakes, snow shovels, and ice melt are easy to find when you actually need them — future you will be grateful.
8. Check Your Landscaping
Trim back any tree branches hanging too close to the roof or power lines — a smart move before fall storms or winter ice weighs them down. It's also a great time to plant bulbs for a spring bloom, if you're looking for a little seasonal payoff.
9. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
Most ceiling fans have a switch to reverse the blade direction. Running them clockwise in cooler months pushes warm air back down into the room, helping your heating system work a little less hard.
10. Look at the Exterior
Check for cracks in the driveway or walkways before freeze-thaw cycles make them worse, and take a look at your siding or paint for anything that needs a touch-up before winter weather sets in.
The bottom line: you don't have to tackle this list in a single weekend. Pick two or three items to knock out each week between now and Halloween, and by the time the first frost hits, your home will be ready for it — and so will you.
